Professor Emeritus Joseph Lagowski Has Passed Away

On April 29th, 2014, Professor Emeritus Joseph Lagowski passed away. Dr. Lagowski completed his Ph.D. in 1959 at Cambridge University. He joined the faculty at The University of Texas at Austin as an Assistant Professor in 1959. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1963 and Full Professor in 1967. He had a long and distinguished career at The University of Texas at Austin. His research interests included general solution phenomena in non-aqueous solvents and organometallic pi-complexes. He served on several department committees, including faculty search committees, the Tom Morgan Memorial Committee, and the University's Science & Math Education Graduate Studies Committee. Additionally, he served as the State Director for the Welch Summer Scholars Program from its inception in 1984 to 2008. In 2008, he retired from the university and was named an Professor Emeritus. As an emeritus, he continued to seek ways to use online learning to bridge the gap between secondary and post-secondary education.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the J.J. Lagowski Undergraduate Scholarship in Chemistry at the University of Illinois, where Dr. Lagowski received his bachelor's degree.  To contribute, checks made payable to the University of Illinois can be mailed to the Department of Chemistry c/o Kristin Lang, 109 Noyes Laboratory, 600 S.
