Drs. Barbara and Cowley Receive American Chemical Society Awards

Congratulations to Professors Paul F. Barbara and Alan H. Cowley who have been recognized by awards from the American Chemical Society. Professor Barbara has received the 2009 E. Bright Wilson Award in Spectroscopy and Professor Cowley has been awarded the 2009 Distinguished Service Award in the Advancement of Inorganic Chemistry. Vignettes of the award recipients will appear in C&EN in early 2009. The recipients will be honored at the ACS Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, March 24,2009, in conjunction with the 237th ACS national meeting in Salt Lake City.

The E. Bright Wilson Award in Spectroscopy recognizes outstanding accomplishments in fundamental or applied spectroscopy in chemistry. Barbara received this award for his many seminal contributions to the chemical application of many of the most important techniques in modern spectroscopy, including ultrafast spectroscopy, single molecule spectroscopy, and near field scanning optical microscopy/spectroscopy.

The ACS Award for Distinguished Service in the Advancement of Inorganic Chemistry is sponsored by Strem Chemicals and recognizes individuals, such as Professor Cowley, who have advanced inorganic chemistry by significant service in addition to performance of outstanding research. A recipient must have demonstrated extensive contributions to the advancement of inorganic chemistry. Activities recognized by the award may include such fields as teaching, writing, research, and administration.

Please extend your congratulations to both Professor Barbara and Professor Cowley on their achievements.
