The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr) announced in November 2009 that Marv Hackert will fill a vacancy on its Executive Committee until the close of the next General Assembly in Madrid, Spain in 2011. The Executive Committee consists of three officers, the immediate past-president of the IUCr, and six regular members. Hackert will be the only member of the Executive Committee representing North, Central and South Americas. The IUCr is a non-profit scientific union adhering to the International Council for Science, and serves the world-wide interests of crystallographers and other scientists employing crystallographic methods. In that role, the IUCr organizes international meetings and conferences; promotes international publication of crystallographic research; sets up its Commissions; and initiates, promotes and coordinates crystallographic research requiring international cooperation.
