The manuscript describes the unprecedented discovery of a diagnostic lipid signature of oncocytic thyroid tumors characterized by an aberrant abundance and diversity of cardiolipin molecules, including several oxidized species. The authors show that both mitochondrial accumulation and alteration in CL composition of mitochondria occurred in oncocytic tumors cells, thus contributing the aberrant molecular signatures detected. These novel findings suggest new candidate targets for clinical and therapeutic use against oncocytic tumors. The research project was led by a postdoctoral researcher in Eberlin’s lab, Dr. Jialing Zhang, and in collaboration with Dr. James Suliburk and Dr. Wendong Yu from the Baylor College of Medicine.
